kasalina, there is a passage in the Old Testament in which the Lord says that while a priest is serving he is not to mark his skin or pierce his body. A few years back, the prophet declared that nobody should receive tattoos and that women should not get anymore than one set of earings.

Since you got these tattoos before you knew about the church, you cannot be charged with knowingly violating anything, so don't worry about it - you're fine.

I do not know about BYU though. They might have a rule excepting people that got tattooed before joining the church. I would call them and ask - just let them know that you got it before you knew about this LDS standard.

Do what makes you feel most comfortable.

Try to be something you're not in order to please his family now and you're headed down a very dangerous path.

"Do what makes you feel most comfortable."
This is NOT what the Lord would say. "Go ahead and sin if you're comfortable with it, and that is all you know." NOT.

"Try to be something you're not in order to please his family now.."
is a little better advice, but in this case definitely is not dangerous. Trying to change for the Lord is not dangerous at all. It is what he asks of all sinners.

A lot of young people do things out of peer pressure.  That is human nature, but when we make decisions without the benefit of experience, we can regret our decisions.  A tattoo is a decision that is very difficult and expensive to reverse.

I have a tattoo of some stars on my side. I got my tattoo before I associated myself with a faith. My fiance is Morman along with his family, and I am also looking into the church for myself. I was just wondering what the actual view was on tattoos as I do not want to offend his family or anyone I have come to care about in the church. I was also planning on attending the LDS- affiliated university BYU-I but was sneered at by a member of the church and told I would never make it in because of my tattoo. It would be very helpful to have some insight from active members of the church as to what maybe the scriptures or teachings say about this. Thanks for your help and answers in advance =]

The Church discourages existing Church members from having tatoos; but that does not mean that if you already have tatoos you can't join the Church, or that you would be despised or frowned upon if you did. Nothing to worry about if you already have tatoos.

Prophets only give advice on how to gain blessings.  you can do with that advice what you want, but I know many people who regret decisions they made in their youth, wishing they had listened to the councel of those older and wiser than them.

Kass, tattoos are extreme body modifications with no medical reason; therefore, they are frowned upon. HOWEVER, since you got yours before ever looking into the Church, I don't see that as a problem; but if you do, dermatologists can now reverse tattoos.
