Hello,
I am very interested in Theravada Buddhism.  However, it is (so I have read) very strict and requires you to become a nun in order to properly follow the teachings.  I am married and a mother of one and that does not work for me.  I do agree with most of what I have read.  Am I barking up the wrong tree?  If not, is their a good starting place for me, a specific book  or readings.  I do not have a Buddist community where I live so the net and libary are my aids (if I do they are not accessible to me)

Thank You

No need to become a nun or a monk. Being a layperson is perfectly fine.

Being married, having kids is good practice. Much to learn from that.

Not in the least.

If not, is their a good starting place for me, a specific book or readings.

Anything by Joseph Goldstein is good. His books are easily gotten.

At this website are tons of Dhamma talks by any number of different Theravadin/vipassana teachers, and some directly address lay practice:

I do not have a Buddist community where I live so the net and libary are my aids (if I do they are not accessible to me)

Also

http://www.accesstoinsight.org/

is a major Theravadin website which has tons of stuff .

And you may find this of interest
