It is impossible to stand upright when one plants his roots in the shifting sands of popular opinion and approval.

I think it's a very silly argument to say that gays should not be allowed to marry because "children have a right to a father and a mother."  If the supporters of Prop 8 were to outlaw divorce, or single parenting, or advocate forced marriage, they would at least be consistent in enforcing this "right to a father and a mother."  They won't because, as every southern trial lawyer likes to say, "That dog won't hunt."

We can argue that children would be better off with a mother and a father, but we don't legislate that value into restrictions upon marriage.  We don't refuse people to get divorced.  We don't force teen couples to wed, upon the discovery that somebody has just gotten knocked up.  We don't take children from single parents.  We have yet to turn the idea that "children deserve two parents" into a strict, legal straitjacket.

As for condemning psychology for once viewing homosexuality as a disorder, one might also note that religion once thought polygamy to be a sound formula for family life.  Those eager to "define marriage" as between "a man and a woman" are conveniently forgetting that it wasn't that long ago when marriage  - within this particular faith community - once defined marriage as "between a man and a woman and a woman and a woman."

Times change.  In the meantime, we would do well not to get so enamored with the idea that "children deserve two parents" that we cherrypick how we apply it.

There is no requirement to have children tied to any marriage license.
