The grid plan and wide streets works wonders for traffic movement.  I suspect that if the need and technology has existed in the 19th Century, that Brigham Young and Joseph Smith would have implemented many innovative means of public mass transit in urban and inter-urban areas, such as magnetic levitation trains, bike paths,  etc..., as part of all city designs.

I think Joseph Smith and Brigham Young were men of vision whose inspiration is reflected in the plans for Nauvoo and Salt Lake City - and I think it's to their credit.
