What is the worst sin according to Islam?
Most if not all Muslims would say shirk, which literally translates to associating partners with God. And this is supported in the Qur'an. For instance we read:
Surely Allah forgives not that a partner should be set up with Him, and forgives all besides that to whom He pleases. (Qur'an 4:48).
But then one may ask what about murder, crimes against humanity, etc? Is it not the worst sin to murder someone rather than holding an incorrect belief?
Many like to give a limited meaning to shirk though the Qur'an does not.
In the 25th Chapter, Verse 43 we read: "Hast thou seen him who takes his low desires for his god? Wilt thou be a guardian over him?"
Thus shirk includes the worship one's low desires, of one's ego. When one commits a crime, they are in fact a slave to their lower base desires, having made that into a god.
As Dr. Zahid Aziz has said, "another point for pondering is that what lies at the root of almost all sins, if not all sins, is the taking of one's own low desires for God or taking other persons for God. So, could this verse [4:48] be stressing that when we ask forgiveness during this life for a sin, we must really ask for forgiveness for the shirk which was the root cause of us committing that sin? If we don't ask forgiveness for that root cause of our sins, and remove it in this life, then after death we cannot be forgiven that shirk. By shirk this verse cannot just mean the commonly understood concept of shirk, as being the worship of others than God by non-Muslims. Otherwise, it would mean that, say, a Muslim despot who committed the most terrible outrages, killing thousands of innocent people, could be forgiven by Allah after death because (technically) he never worshipped anything other than God, but on the other hand an ordinary idol-worshipper, who led a mundane daily life not harming anyone, could not be forgiven!"

First off the Quran does not explictly mention what is the "worst" sin.
In Islam, shirk (Arabic: شرك širk) is the sin of idolatry or polytheism, i.e. the deification or worship of anyone or anything other than the singular God, or more literally the establishment of "partners" placed beside God. It is the vice that is opposed to the virtue of tawhid (monotheism).
The word širk is derived from the Arabic root Š-R-K (ش ر ك), with the general meaning of "to share". In the context of the Qur'an, the particular sense of "sharing as an equal partner" is usually understood, so that polytheism is "attributing a partner to Allah". In the Qur'an, širk and the related word (plural Stem IV active participle) mušrikūn (مشركون) "those who commit shirk and plot against Islam" often clearly refers to the enemies of Islam (as in verse 9.1–15) but sometimes it also refers to erring Muslims.
ANY sharing of a partner with God is Shirk and is therefore UNFORGIVABLE. Wether it is polytheists worshiping idols or Christians who believe that Jesus is Divine or those who believe in the Trinity.
" Otherwise, it would mean that, say, a Muslim despot who committed the most terrible outrages, killing thousands of innocent people, could be forgiven by Allah after death because (technically) he never worshipped anything other than God, but on the other hand an ordinary idol-worshipper, who led a mundane daily life not harming anyone, could not be forgiven!"
A despot who happened to be a Muslim could not kill thousands of people. He may be able to convince others who happen to be Muslims to kill thousands. But all these other people have freewill.
"Most if not all Muslims would say shirk, which literally translates to associating partners with God. And this is supported in the Qur'an."
But they are wrong and Dr. Zahid Aziz is right!
And of course it could be argued that the despot or those who obeyed him of their own freewill are "NOT REAL MUSLIMS", because Islam would never, ever, ever sanction despots.

Is shirk the basis for it being a crime punishable by death in some countries when a muslim converts to other religions?
