While on my vacation in Hawaii I visited a Hindu monastery. I learned that there is a sect of Hinduism that is atheistic - believing "We are nothing more than 'molecular." I realize that atheists are present in Unitarian churches and at times in meetings of Friends, but Hinduism???? I'm reminded of the Utube video of Penn Jillette talking about the atheist friend who attends a Quaker church. But now I learn of atheistic Hinduism. I have to wonder about the specific beliefs; I used to attend an extremely liberal church and found that atheists' views were really incompatible.

I usually don't do links, but I really don't know much about this issue. Read the links if you like or just skip them.

Anyone have a good knowledge of this belief system? ...Just looking to further my understanding. Is this simply holding onto tradition???

It could be they are like some christian Atheists, Buddhist Atheists, Jewish Atheists, and the like. They retain the culture that goes along with that religion but dump the god stuff.

I am a Humanist. I believe in a rational philosophy of life, informed by science, inspired by art, and motivated by a desire to do good for its own sake and not by an expectation of a reward or fear of punishment in an afterlife.

Hinduism is a collection of many different philosophies and belief systems.  It is not just one single religion.  Yes, there is a philosophical school that is atheistic in Hinduism.  I believe it is called the Charvaka.

I know little more than what is written at Wikipedia.
