I'll make the first comment -

this was written elsewhere, but bears repeating here...

we are moving forward
lightly and gently with each other –
making no assumptions –
making no challenges –
expressing utmost respect towards all  –
and keeping in mind that one man’s mores can be another man’s insults -

More of a comment than a question, you said:

"Who is a shaman?
And what is shamanism?
These two questions are both very difficult
and very easy questions to answer.

As a purist, I tend to keep things simple,
so the criteria for me lies in one’s responses to three questions.
IMHO, and IME, these 3 questions,
stripped as they are of any expectation and culturalism,
reduce the perception of shamanism down to its crux ...

1.  Can you access NOR* (I don’t care the method)?
2.  Can you retrieve from NOR and bring back to OR*
information useful to either yourself or to another?
3.  Have you witnessed fruits of such information
     manifest enough to impact OR?"

So it all hinges on your ability to interact with NOR? OK, I like that. I would like you to go one step further and make this the official working definition of shaman on this board.  It would prevent all the endless debates over who and what is a shaman.  If the term is defined by an authority figure such as yourself, there is no possibility for debate.  Right or wrong, this is the definition we use here.

Personally, I think the term "Shaman" is about as malleable and ill-defined as "Wiccan" or "Pagan."  What is a Pagan?  what common belief to all Pagans share?  I don't believe there is one.  Same with Shamanism.  Can one be a Shaman without traveling to NOR?  Some people might claim yes.  Some might view a Shaman as one who is skilled at healing with herbs.  An arbitrary definition like yours is better than endless bickering.  I like it.

I believe the word Shaman had an exclusive definition at one time, but I believe that has been lost in time and the constant use of the word as a Mystic or anyone that practises holistic medicine. To the point that we now have NDN People using the word simply to get their point across, as this is a modern definition which all seem to know. Is this right? I dont know, to some it is at least a starting point, then as views and beliefs are reveled the questions begin to get bigger and the comments more heated, until the very mention of the word conjures up negative energy, and positive to others. You may thank Science and certain Archeologist's for the modern catch all definition and the confusion. But for some one to say--This is what a Shaman is. hehe, do you really believe that will be happening on BN? or believe the rest of the world will buy into the concept? I would agree that at least here we could say--This is our definition of Shaman and we will consider posts according to this our own Personal value of the word. This may work at least here, but it will defiantly be challenged by new contributors. It will be up to our gracious host to consider the intent and of course the source. Can ya feel the power NHT, can ya feel it?! hehe

Hey Beerlover!

What a nice surprise!  Hello...
Sorry for the delay in responding –
sometimes RL just eats into cyberspace time...

Thank you for sharing your insightful idea ...
And I couldn’t agree more with you
about the ‘endless debates...[and]bickering’ ;
I’d much rather be learning than battling  ...

To that end I’m thinking that your suggestion
of an ‘official’ working definition
might just offer an solution,
so I decided it give it a try.

Again, thanks for taking the time
to offer your suggestion –
maybe you'll stick around to see what happens!

Man, that grieves me. It truly does. I'll miss your presence here mystic. And though I feel your grief and anger, understand that what is posted is not all there is to it.. but I tell you friend, words have more power than you give them credit for. And what was said cannot be unsaid, as this is part of the journey too.. do you have so many friends that are like you up in your lands? I envy that. I have none.
