When I started attending my current church (a different denomination from what I'd been attending before), I sat down with my pastor to make sure the denomination was a good fit for me. One of the questions I asked him was, "is this denomination liberal?" His answer threw me for a loop. "Do you mean liberal politically, or liberal in a Biblical sense?" The latter meaning, was I asking if the denomination/particular congregation stuck "conservatively" to Bible concepts such as love and helping others. Thinking more since then, I realize there are two ways of being liberal or conservative about the Bible's teachings. There's his sense of "conservative," which I agree with....and then the sense of "conservative" that most people think of, in that they would be horrified to know I wear pants and don't want children and take birth control and have a job outside the home and don't necessarily want to get married.
I don't, however, like others, know the difference between "liberal" and "progressive," if there is a difference. |

There are people who are theologically "progressive" whose politics cover a pretty wide spectrum. Likewise there are social and political "liberals" whose religious convictions go from atheism to the evangelical position of the Sojurners community. Is that what your question means? |

This all sounds very familiar to me, and I agree with the assessment of 'Thinking Christian'... it's one I like! I too haven't heard the term 'progressive Christian', but it seemed of all the labels the closest one to how I conceive of myself. Be lovely to meet you all. Come over to my page and have a look... I need some friends! xxx |

There is supposed to be 13 replies to this thread, with Stardove last. I can only get four, and page two returns blank. That must be a BUG. Even cuter now I get post #1. Gee I wish this message board would adhere to what are pretty much Internet standards. Post #1 is the FIRST POST Duh! At least by adding my own post I have dug out some others. Mine is now the tenth post. |

I did a copy and paste and sent above to staff saying your post was # 14. Change can be rough, especially when there are glitches.

I see clicking on the link to display the oldest post first seems to have the right effect, that all posts are displayed. |

I tell people I am a Progressive Christian, but I prefer the term Modern Christians. |
