Today the SOM Daily Guides is about the importance of practicing the presence of God. Here is the affirmation.
"Today my attention is on the presence of Spirit within. As I go about my day I am aware that Spirit is the essence of all I see and of all whom I meet."
Can anyone give me some examples of this? It's easy to practice this while praying or meditating but how do you do this in everyday daily activities with so much going on. Thanks, Phyl

I think of it as praying without ceasing to constantly re-mind myself that everything is Spirit in form.  When I think of anything as only a materialistic object I have the opportunity to bring myself back to the recognition of Truth with an affirmation like "This too is Spirit" or "God Is All There Is."  Anything that will take me out of the automatic mode of my ordinary consciousness.

The most famous, perhaps, practitioner of practicing the presence of God was the the 17th century French monastic, Brother Lawrence.  I just finished rereading his book Practicing The Presence Of God.  Although his experience and understanding of God are different than mine,  the practice is still an excellent one and I think rather challenging.

My goal has never been to do this literally constantly, but I do make an effort to stop, take deep a breath and re-mind myself throughout the day to give my attention to the inward essence of who I am and who you are and even who the annoying barking dog next door is.

As you do what you are doing, look around at what is about you, and say to your self, "God made this and is pleased"  so feel the presance of God in appreaciating everything God makes.  All is perfict because God made it, all developes and learnes and moves towards God.

Spiritual practice is not limited to when we are in meditation, but is right here in our "ordinary" life, our daily routines.  In Zen Buddhism, it is taught that we carry the practice to all our activities, even those we consider mundane (washing the dishes, brushing our teeth, doing our taxes, etc.).

For myself, a very effective and simple practice to get into is mindful breathing.  First the breath, then the movement.  Wheather that 'movement' is physical, mental or emotional.  When we utilize the breath in this way we begin to still the mind and calm the obsticales that prevent our full awareness of Spirit.

At different times during the day I will bring my full attention to the breath, knowing that infinite Love and Wisdom is within and around me.  It dosn't take very long, sometimes just a few  breaths (practiced mindfully) do the trick .   It is a Spiritual Law that, when we become conscious of anything, we become attuned to it and it becomes a part of us... the more we become conscious of it, the deeper we imprint it on our subconscious mind and develop spiritual strength.

Zedd,

Would that be the same as bringing conscious attention of the superconscious mind to impress upon the subconscious mind, and then in turn affecting the conscious mind and one's actions?  I know that I am sounding as if I am speaking in circles here; I'll attempt to word it more clearly.  I see the levels of consciousness as such:  conscious - all that we say and act in the present moment - that which can be seen by others, subconscious - the warehouse of all memories, and the superconscious - that place where all ideas come from the source of our good - the Father within.  The superconscious mind cannot be changed in its nature; it is always good - it operates in the Absolute.  The subconscious cannot be changed in its nature (being the impressionable one, the one that operates at the bequest or behalf of both sides - the conscious and superconscious), but it can be changed in what it holds (the good or the "bad").  The conscious mind is changeable as well, but once you know the Truth, you are inclined to strive to change the conscious mind to operate from the Father within, to practice the presence of God.  The subconscious mind is the gateway between the conscious and the superconscious minds....... "I am the gate"......

Philliz,

One way that I practice the presence of God, especially whenever I find myself in a challenging situation (as in with a belligerent type of a person for example), I call to mind the words and the music of a favorite hymn/song, "Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place."  I find that to what I give my attention is what grows, so if someone is engaging in what can be seen as negative behavior, I need to turn my attention away from that behavior and turn to what is the Truth of their being - a child of God.

Lori,

That is pretty much how I understand the process as well.  In my Metaphysics course it says, "Our goal is to unify the two lower phases of mind into the Superconscious Phase of Mind, which brings us into Cosmic or Christ Consciousness."  Each phase of mind has a "unique" but vital function in all forms of our development (spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically).

From my own understanding, Jesus gave a very clear and definite instruction regarding this when saying, "Seek ye frist the Kingdom of God and his righteousness".  Developing a consciousness of God's presence in our lives and a realization of our relationship to this one Source should be first in all unfoldment.  From this state of awareness "all ... things shall be added unto you."

“I am grateful to God … I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day.”—2 Timothy 1:3

One  of  the after effects of meditation for  me  is that  I see  a  perfect  beauty  in everything for awhile.  It  gradually wears off as the day goes on .  Years  ago  when  it first   started  I thought  I was seeing auras or something.  The people I  see seem to glow   and  there is a noticeable perfection about  them all.  Then  I realized all living things also had this 'look'.  Of  course  this has something to do with my consciousness.  Could I see this all  the  time? I  don't know.  But having seen it often enough I know this  perfection  exists.

In the course  of using affirmations for healing  for myself  I decided that everytime I  was reminded of the improvement I would repeat the "Thank you God , for perfect life".  Now I find it running throught my mind even  when things aren't entirely positive.  I guess I've said  it so often it centers me.

I haven't been  able to find anything about these experiences in literature from Unity, so I just accept them as part of me.
