The following link is from JibJab.com. For anyone not familiar with it, it is a site on political satire. Ten Lions sent this to me for commentary, and wished it be posted here, for discussion. Be forewarned, the following video is designed to provoke.

If the link doesn't work, go to jibjab.com and look for Thundercloud '08.

The link works fine, love.  I've just watched it again and I still find it derogatory and denigrating... yet I still see the humour when taken in the context of what we've been seeing from our political parties and what will soon be upcoming.  If there hadn't been such a culturally specific agenda, it might have been a good farce on our political process.

As it stands...  :(

Ah.. .good, thanks, IP. I cannot view it from work, as the site is blocked.

I agree. It is very derogatory regarding Native American culture and religion, which may or may not have been their intent. If it wasn't their intent, they failed. But very little is sacred when it comes to political satire, so I honestly don't think they care.

I understand the commentary on immigration, as I said to you privately. It is laughable that the American public is so up in arms over Mexican immigration, when their own ancestors are immigrants.

The real shame is the depiction of the modern stereotype regarding NDN's. Casinos, drugs and drinking. There is little understanding of the reasons and causes for these things, or the real cultural sore spots that they are. I likened this to Jews and Usury in the Middle Ages, and I am certain that Buns will understand that connection. Bashing a people over the corner that the dominant culture has pushed them into is stupidity at best, and shows a complete lack of empathy and knowledge of history.
I admire humor AZ every one that knowz me will testify...
Like I said, Tenz... I saw the humour when viewed through the perspective of party politics - but sometimes a joke is taken a little too far to the extreme.  When you start stereotyping culural and religious beliefs to make a totally unrelated point, I consider that crossing the line.  I've not seen any of my Native American friends lately... been too tied up with other things... but I'm curious as to what their reaction is going to be.  I can pretty much guess.

I guess it all depends upon what people are laughing at -- either common NDN stereotypes being lampooned or the stereotype of an NDN being exploited to lampoon a totally corrupt political process.

I find the former funny as hell and the latter insulting as hell.

In this instance however  I would walk on the side of caution and take the postion of TenLionz in as NDNs are not well-enough represented in mainstream media to guarantee a common discernment of fact from fiction, the use of this "comedy" without extensive educational background material about REAL NDNs provided before its airing can only be viewed as 100% insulting.

No different IMHO than an antisemite telling a joke about Jews.  The relationship and the intimate cultural knowledge does not exist to make it funny, only insulting as from an outsider.

I look forward to the day when such humor will not be insulting.  Sadly, that day is NOT today.

Yes. This is exactly the problem. Well said, Buns.
