Thank you for that link. Interesting reading.
I agree.  Very interesting.  I must admit I am out of the loop as far as childrens books are concerned.  I do love a good movie but will probably skip this one.  I also just love to go to the theater.  I don't know how you guys could be happy just at home with a dvd a year after the movie came out.  That would drive me insane.

I will also skip this movie but had planned to give it a miss before I knew anything about it because Nicole Kidman is in it and I do not enjoy her work. I enjoy the theater as well, although I prefer live theater the most. A good "who dun it?" live is a real treat.

Stepstone,
Maybe when my daughter has a little more patients for sitting still I will be able to enjoy the theater more but at this point it is way more of a hassle and a waste of money to go. At least with a DVD I can pause it to fix her some milk or go push her on her swing set for a while, lol, and then start it again and I haven't wasted money on the parts of the movie that I missed.  Have a great day. *Newtoit*

True... and I'm not big on movie theaters either - I don't mind the occasional movie, but am more of a homebody.  Guess it takes all kinds, huh?

VM,
I agree, it does take all kinds. I am also a homebody but since becoming a single mother I no longer have the freedom to go out and do things so sometimes I miss just being able to when I wanted even if I really didn't want to go anywhere. Now just going to get groceries is an ordeal. lol albeit most of the times she is good, she still finds the need to talk a mile and a half a minute. lol   *Newtoit*

Hi Julianna, what a cute kitty on your profile. I just posted my grandchildren's kitty. Bella is not a year old yet. She has to put up with a lot from a 4 and 2 year old.

It is good to 'see' you too. I don't hang out here as much as i used to. Do not have the time. Am babysitting the 2 Grandchildren, and get wiped out from that.

I am always on the lookout for GOOD movies for the Grandchildren. Also for my husband and me too.
We are in the Disney movie club and the Columbia House DVD club. We do the same thing and view movies at home.
Maybe if there is a really exceptional one will go out to the movie theater. We try to go once a year to live theater. There are many theaters in the Phoenix Metro but its too time consuming plus drains the budget to go often.
We went to one last year, " The Buddy Holly Story", here in our town at the Palm Theater. Would you believe this  is a theater in a neighborhood mall? The building was a large grocery store, 10 years ago. Time marches on.

The Golden Compass movie was panned by the newspaper critics in this mornings papers. I hope some of the parents read local news and take a hint.
Bye to all for now.

Di_ ... I agree with you completely.  The last live theater I went to was a Sherlock Holmes.  A certain actor couldn't make it that day and was replaced by Leonard Nimoy.  He does very well on stage.  It's been so long since I've gone to see a movie ...  I figure now if there is anything worth watching, it'll do just fine on my DVD player.

i've read all of those books...going back to the original phillip pullman junk....demon-friend?.....no, it's daemon and it's symbolic of their souls. thats greek actually and mentioned several times in mythology and philosophical works. a daemon was just taken one step further and embodied to actual characters in the books. as for whether or not you let your children see it is up to you. but its a work of fiction. plain and simple. and actually, for childrens books, they are very well written. all the names and everything are very symbolic and it can teach you a lot about human characteristics in ways that are unique and thought-provoking. a lot like "screwtape letters" by c.s. lewis in that sense....i mean obviously very different types of literature....sort've.  but in the sense that they are meant to get you to revive what really happens behind human consciousness (c.s. lewis) and learn what happens inside our daemons which is another word for soul/conscience (pullman). so, if you're worried about the kids getting nightmares, absolutely dont see it.....but if you and some friends want to see an amazing young adult fiction work put on screen....i recommend it!
