In one of the threads here 57 made the following comment: "salvation doesn't depend on you doing good in the world."

Which prompted me to ask: WHY should I be doing good in the world then?

I got no answer ...

Maybe somebody else wants to help him out?

[update: 57 made that claim in this thread: community.beliefnet.com/go/thread/view/4... ]

IMO, doing good is an outward sign of a changed heart which is necessary for salvation.   Reconciliation with God and man is the soul of salvation and it is demonstrated by a person’s actions, not his/her words only.

Matthew 7:19-21

19  Every tree that doesn’t grow good fruit is cut down, and thrown into the fire.

20  Therefore by their fruits you will know them.

21  Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven; but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

James 2:17-20

17  Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead in itself.

18  Yes, a man will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show you my faith.

19  You believe that God is one. You do well. The demons also believe, and shudder.

20  But do you want to know, vain man, that faith apart from works is dead?

Morality is irrelevant to the god of Christianity.  The only importance is, apparently, agreement with a faith statement.

A dead faith is preferred to the holiest life of an infidel. The Christian god will give preference to Donald Trump over Ghandi.

“Feminism has fought no wars. It has killed no opponents. It has set up no concentration camps, starved no enemies, practiced no cruelties. Its battles have been for education, for the vote, for better working conditions…for safety on the streets…for child care, for social welfare…for rape crisis centers, women’s refuges, reforms in the law.

If someone says, “Oh, I’m not a feminist,” I ask, “Why, what’s your problem?”

But one does not need to believe in your god to do good. And many don't yet do good as well.

57 implied though that doing good works DOES NOT MATTER for your salvation since it has already be decided upon BEFORE you have been born.

That is how it looks to me also. Everyone is free to choose what to believe and how to live.

We all have our opinions and sometimes they differ.

First, as you know, we don't start threads on members here--nor do we lift anything a member wrote to start a separate thread without the member's express permission to do so.  And in the event that permission is granted, we certainly don't lift any comments out of their full context.

So, knowing that 57 is active on this board and assuming (for now unless we hear otherwise) that 57 has granted permission, please provide the reference and the full context of these comments.

Unless I am convinced by Scripture and plain reason, my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and I will not retract anything, for to go against conscience would be neither right nor safe.  Here I stand.  I can do no other.  God help me.  Amen.

Well; for one thing, it's illegal to prowl cars, cheat on taxes, shoot people in a drive-by, push drugs, vandalize homes, threaten the President's life, exceed the speed limit, J-walk, run a red light, be cruel to animals, neglect children, abuse a spouse, kidnap a baby, immigrate illegally, drink underage, trespass, steal identities, impersonate a police officer, etc. I'd say we should all be doing good just to stay out of prison if nothing else.

Free to choose what to believe? Hm, I doubt that ;) But I don't want to transform this in yet another debate about free will ...

Yeah, but you can't both be right. Either he is or you are. Or none of you. But both? Impossible.

Are you trying to provoke an argument between me and 57? Each of us has to decide for ourself what is true and what is not.

Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them
