Did that apply both to Hebrew and non-Hebrew slaves?

If you can; then slavery as evil is not a moral absolute.


If your choice was death as a prisoner of war or slavery-which would you choose?

I can't think of any situation in which slavery is morally acceptable and not evil. Letting someone live as a slave, rather than killing them as a POW, is not moral behavior. It is evil behavior to put another human being in such a situation. Enslaving someone during war is not "more moral" or "better" than killing someone during war. Both are evil and immoral.

'Maltreatment for its own sake' would perfectly describe the Vatican ban on condoms in HIV-plagued countries.


But there are still no moral absolutes.

When doing so would prevent a greater evil - the scenario you referred to.


You'll also recall the practice in eg the Carthaginian form of the Phoenician religion where the male children of the nobility were sacrificed by burning, when the going got tough.  Culturally this was highly moral conduct, offering the deity that which was most precious.  It doesn't involve cannibalism but it makes the point.

So what moral absolutes are there?For almost any evil situation one can think of something worse.
