the vast majority of the combined groups were too apathetic to help the project succeed, that's not an opinion or a lie... it's REALITY by the very fact that the project is dead.

You seem to have this obsession with atheists not being as committed to atheism as believers are to their faith based myths. 

There is a simple explanation for this lack of commitment by atheists.  A rationally derived position has no need for a passionate defense, or proselytization as any reasonable person can find atheism simply by careful analysis of their religious beliefs.  There is no need to "Protest too much" as there is no belief to be defended.  I can understand how this irritates believers in the irrational, but that is the way of life.
