I've often wondered if people who make the ends of time statement/predictions consider that the Planet Earth could be destroyed by a cataclysmic collision, or that the sun could go supernova, perhaps destroying the entire solar system, and yet the VAST majority of the universe would continue along as if almost nothing had happened (and certainly nothing out of the ordinary...)  Maybe this is just a rehash of the old "if a tree falls in the woods..." kind of thing?

The Mayans did! And this is one of the sources for popular 2012 doomsday prophecies.  So did the Egyptians, Greeks, ancient India, Aztecs . . . and so on.

The Mayans really didn't have an end time prophecy. Their calendar ended. That's all. Really, how long did you expect them to calculate it?  Even if they had continued it, it would have been the beginning of a new cycle for them. End times in their calendar is a modern notion.
