If taken literally, it can be read as saying that nephilim genetic material was mixed with human, hence may still be.

I think MMarcoe's hypothesis makes most sense - that they were a human tribe of sturdy foreigners who faded into legend.

 The genetic material would have had to have been on the ark within the genes of 1 or more of the eight passingers.
