Below is a link to the 1st of a 3-part Interfaith Lecture at Oxford by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks in which the desires and hopes of the Age of Enlightenment were seemingly dashed by the stubborn continued existence of religion.

I  believe that anyone who discusses religion should at the very least take note of the brief observations that Rabbi Sachs enumerates in this fascinating lecture:
