But, to each nation their own.

We prefer to use the term "sensible", rather than draconian.

True. People have to be governed.

True. But to what degree is the question.

I don't think street preaching needs to be governed, unless/until it gets to the level of, say, calling for marching upon the local abortion clinic with torches and pitchforks.

They are not draconian. That is a buzz word people like to use to cause trouble. No one is harmed by people being polite, and not being allowed to harass people.

Fancy being against polite and decent, respectful behaviour.

Ken is right. People do need to be governed. Usually the ones who need it most, are the ones who want to get rid of government. and Regulation.

I think free expression needs to be goverened as little as humanly possible. "Polite, decent and respectful" are too wide open for interpretation. Some people might think preaching exceeds those bounds. Others might think Insane Clown Posse T-shirts exceed them.

I find street preaching to be, at the worst I've seen it, merely annoying, and easily solved by simply walking away.

So Mytmouse, why do you think some theists are freaked by atheists?

I like the arresting idea. No one has a "RIGHT" to harass me. No one. The religious nut trying to control my religious thoughts does not have more rights then I do. I have a RIGHT to walk down the street un-accosted by annoying idiots trying to find converts.

You come too near me in my space, trying to sell your god and religion, you (generic) may find you have been sprayed by something unpleasant. Think about it.

P.S. I see you do fear atheists, since you are not actually addressing the topic, and have gone completely off topic, which is really rude.

A tyrant must put on the appearance of uncommon devotion to religion. Subjects are less apprehensive of illegal treatment from a ruler whom they consider god-fearing and pious. On the other hand, they do less easily move against him, believing that he has the gods on his side. Aristotle

I can't walk away. I'm waiting for a bus, and I must stand at the bus stop. In a civil society the right of ordinary citizens to go about their ordinary business in their accustomed manner takes precedence over  the rignt of street preachers and various malcontents to express themselves in the public thoroughfare. Don't these people have churches to go to or halls they can rent?

You can't walk away from the McDonalds ad either.  I simply ignore both.  I am offended by both equally and for the same reasons: the effect they have on the children of the community.  But I can and do use both as object lessons to children I care about to point out the seductive dangers of the advertisements, and encourage them to educate their friends as well.

A Mcdonalds ad is not talking in your face and following you.  Street proselytisers will follow you and get in your face. If you are captive at a bus stop of other immoveable situation you are trouble.  You can't just ignore them.

It is a scary experience when they tack themselves onto you, even for only a few yards, shouting at you about how you should repent or go to hell. You can't ignore them.

P.S. You do have a point about the affect on children though. for both circumstances.

I prefer to not think of or call other people "bastards." Even if they are saying things I strongly disagree with.

I guess, I'm open-minded, easy going and very supportive of free expression.
