Either that or they are just using the malady of people as an occasion to publicize their own cause. If so, you better believe they'll reap a large (non-monetary) harvest.
Btw. Even JW's don't have a charity advertising their humanitarian efforts. They just send volunteers and donations. I believe they would find marketing on unfortunate circumstances highly inappropriate. Especially so, since, Jesus said not to let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.
I would love for people to know what I know. I'm just not certain if I would like them to find out how I found out.
I don't think a very smart person would use this venue to donate to relief for Haiti. A smarter way is to partner with a group that will match your donation so that you can 'dbl your effort'.
Something for professed christians to consider: every single action defines.
Gradually I came to realize that people will more readily swallow lies than truth, as if the taste of lies was homey, appetizing: a habit. Martha Gellhorn
True Christianity must line up with the Bible, the word of God. True Christianity will not be proven wrong, although people may appear to make it sound untrue by arguing against it by using false statements.

Is it possible that some people just wanted to give a particular group an outlet to contribute from, and that there aren't any bad motives involved? Many people are able to donate through their church, but Ex-JWs as a group are very wary of other religions, and possibly even charities given some leftover JW stigmas, and may not know where to send money, but sincerely want to help.
And let's not pretend that JWs don't use disasters to do ALL SORTS of back-patting for themselves, how quickly they respond, how much they help their brothers, and how AMAZED the secular authorities are at their humanitarian efforts.
Could Jesus microwave a burrito so hot that he himself could not eat it?

Re para 1: Sure anything is possible, but considering how many very secular efforts there are, Summer's question becomes more apropos.
Re para 2: If JW's did as you say, they would have used the above to solicit more donations, yes? But that is not the case. The only things said about how quickly they respond are by those who are not JW's. When you were one, you never did really read the yearbooks, did you?
I would love for people to know what I know. I'm just not certain if I would like them to find out how I found out.

Everyone seems to be trying to help, from all corners and creeds. This is just another example, an outlet for people to give, if they haven't taken advantage from others. The money goes to causes like the Red Cross, among others.
Plainview: I don't want to talk about those things. I see the worst in people. I don't need to look past seeing them to get all I need.
To the second bit, I know exactly why JWs do all their back-patting. Highlighting areas where secular sources may have given them a bit of praise for their efforts. Look how awesome we are, surely Jehovah is blessing us, if you want to give make sure you give to the Worldwide Work, and we'll take care of it from there.

Suuure it does. If so, then it IS just a platform to market themselves (if not actually get paid)instead of just pointing people to the Red Cross and others.

Uhh...what?

I've never seen where this was done, perhaps you care to provide an example of where they asked people to give to the Worldwide Work for humanitarian efforts. If not, maybe you should keep your fingers off the keyboard.

They talk more about how the Watchtower / Jehovah's Witnesses DON'T give 'like we're doing'. Almost nothing about the people who are to be helped by this. Kinda like that isn't the real point.
Looks like someone learned something from 2008 political campaign ads. Use a pretty face, make ugly comments, and push actually helping people into second place to defaming people.
