It looks like the heavyweights will jump in the ring here in Seattle tomorrow night to bash one another about the head and other extremities with the devil incarnate. Does Satan Exist? Who knows? If you think you do know whether he exists or not, tell us what you think, and why. We can have our own little debate here, and find out if we cover the same arguments as the mighty warriors on national TV. I'm guessing ours will be better. So I'll open the debate with a simple assertion: There is no Satan. Now if you would like to prove there is a Satan, then you should be able to explain Satan's role in human activities such as crime and abuse and warfare and other bad things we do to one another. I say we do those things, and Satan does not help in any way. Prove me wrong. Proponents of Satan (that means you, Ebon) are more than welcome to participate. People who think the devil is the good guy might have particularly appealing arguments in favor of his existence. So let's hear it for the devil--show some sympathy and taste now.
"In order that nothing may be wanting to the felicity of the blessed spirits in heaven, a perfect view is granted to them of the tortures of the damned."--St. Thomas Aquinas

For me, Satan is on par with the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy. I used to believe in all 3 of them. But, no more. Satan is an excuse for people that can't deal with their own responsibility for their actions. [Except for people like Ebon]

Satan ... Al Zawahiri >:-@ss
The haters and killers are the real devils. Bin Laden is nothing more than an Islamic supremacist, and a filthy rat hiding in a cave, waiting to get exterminated.

Believing Satan or God exists is ignorant.

observing that some things appear to be created so there must be a creator and that there seems to be opposition in the world so it must have its personification as well is ignorant? how so?

Only to the uneducated must there be a creator and this so called personified opposition.

Satan is presented as the epitome of ignorant pride, a tempter, and an accuser. He can be understood as a real being or as a metaphor. Any which way, these three things exist.
Unless I am convinced by Scripture and plain reason, my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and I will not retract anything, for to go against conscience would be neither right nor safe. Here I stand. I can do no other. God help me. Amen.

I do not believe that Satan exists as an entity any more than God exists as an entity. They are both names we have used to describe something undescribable. In the case of God/dess/s, something that explains creation, to turn to in fear, to turn to in awe, to turn to in need. Satan, who incidentally started out pretty neutral, seems to have come to be something to explain evil, justify our bad choices, and kind of encompasses bogey men and anything else that might jump out at us from the dark. The universe clearly came from somewhere/thing or at least showed up. Evil clearly occurs. Naming them and anthropomorphizing them does not mean they exist as beings that we can nicely label. Anthropomorphizing them does not mean that what they represent does not exist.
I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize what you heard was not what I meant...

Over the years here I've expressed that if a being such as Satan exists & he has all this power that he supposedly has then it's only because God deliberately created him & gave him all this so called power. Afteral. it is said that God is the creator of everything. Now I've had Christians claim that God didn't create Satan. So if God didn't create Satan, then that means that Satan like God has always existed & is the equal of God. That is if you accept the logic used by some Christians. However if you take the view that only God created everything, then logicly he is also the creator of Satan, which then makes hin ultimately responsible for all that Satan does. Either way, I view God & Satan like the old Roman coin depicting the Roman God Janus. Two faces of the same coin.
