American Chesterton Society Conference-usually in St Paul, MN Mid-June, but the 2009 Conference is scheduled Aug. 6-8 in Seattle, WA - you go, West Coast...
Some of what Gilbert K. Chesterton says:
"To have a right to do a thing is not at all the same as to be right in doing it."
"I agree with the realistic Irishman who said he preferred to prophesy after the event."  (Happy St. Patrick's Day!)
"The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him."
"War is not 'the best way of settling differences; it is the only way of preventing their being settled for you."
"If there were no God, there would be no atheists."
"Once abolish the God, and the government becomes the God."
"Men are ruled, at this minute by the clock, by liars who refuse them news, and by fools who cannot govern."
"He is a very shallow critic who cannot see an eternal rebel in the heart of a conservative."
"You can never have a revolution in order to establish a democracy. You must have a democracy in order to have a revolution."
"A citizen can hardly distinguish between a tax and a fine, except that the fine is generally much lighter."
"Men do not differ much about what things they will call evils; they differ enormously about what evils they will call excusable."
"There are some desires that are not desirable."
"Fallacies do not cease to be fallacies because they become fashions."
"Religious liberty might be supposed to mean that everybody is free to discuss religion. In practice it means that hardly anybody is allowed to mention it."
"The riddles of God are more satisfying than the solutions of man."
"You cannot grow a beard in a moment of passion."
I am still waiting to see what is so good about getting older. My life anymore is out of control and its hard to get it all together. Not really sure where to start. Then i noticed this group today. Hopefully its the beginning of something good :)
Why is your life out of control?  Menopause is one thing, Perimenopause is quite another.  If you feel like every other week/month you're somebody else, it could be because your hormones are in a state of flux that much.
Some of symptoms: fatigue, asthma, weight gain, insomnia, early periods, late periods, excessive bloating, constipation, irritable bowel, depression.
From personal experience, I would recommend a complete physical and consult w/ your OB/GYN as it pertains to nutrition and hormnal balance.

One of the things I love about being 40ish is that I am wiser than before. I think I am also a better person inside and out due to past experiences, etc. At times the thought of getting older isn't really anything to cheer about but then I think of how blessed I am to have the opportunity TO get older. There are classmates, friends, etc that have passed on and I am just glad to be alive. So when I start to think of "oh my gosh, I'm getting older!" I start thinking of how blessed I am to have my family and friends, to be able to walk without assitance, etc.

I'm with you Fushia, I love the wisdom and the clarity.  There is so much foolishness that I don't even entertain now, and in my 20s it would be ruling my world.

But my knee hurts now....lol.

I like the 40's for various differant reasons,  I do feel a lot wiser, though it took me a while to find myself (well most of myself anyway!). I'm still impulsive though which can be interesting, one of the best things about being a fully fledged adult is that one has experienced a lot more than a 20-30 year old. I have a few friends in their 30's  who often come to me for an opinion or just to ask my thoughts on their problems. I try my best not to sway anyone in a particular direction but just sometimes to point out things that they mightn't have thought of themselves can help them make up their own minds..
I still play xbox, even though I keep getting beaten in online games by my juniors, my thumbs aint what they used to be or maybe its my eyesight or god forbid my reaction times are slowing down.....
Yes my hair is gray (er) I started going grey early in life, yes my gut is slightly over my belt, yes my wrinkles around my eyes are more pronounced BUT inside  I feel way younger and more settled than I ever thought possible.
So to those of you just turned 40 and worrying about it....stop...enjoy the moment and every minute that your life has to offer....go and experience everything that you can while you can....
As for me....well the 50's are fast approaching...and everybody these days seems to have become an ageist so just laugh at them all and wave your walking stick at em.....lol

I am much more gray on top than what I used to be, but at 43- I suppose it's to be expected. I am also, em, more rotund, but you know what? I have decided to stop obsessing about it. That's another good thing about being 40 +.
I wasted decades worrying that I was too fat, too this, too that - It did me absolutely NO good at all, and I know that I wasn't any happier when I was thinner OR younger. I have decided to be happy just as I am.

My mother has that expression "Keep on Keeping on" embroided into a cushion given to her by her best friend. I think it is highly appropriate in most every situation.
