Terry Gross of NPR was interviewing (former Jesuit, now Episcopalian) Jack Miles, author of "God a Biography" and the general editor of "The Norton Anthology of World Religions".  In the interview he described religion as "our ritualized confession of ignorance".

The more I think about his comment the more it resonates with me.   It made me wonder why we would ritualize something we are ignorant of.  The things I am ignorant of I do not invest effort in, unless I believe I could rid myself of my ignorance.  Perhaps religion is in a completely different category due to its nature and our limitations, yet somehow we "know" its reality.  Does that sound like hogwash?

Have you heard of Jack Miles?  What do you make of his comment?
