Obama's "education" department just ditched "No Child Left Behind".
Which basically scored teachers and schools on the results of their work. It also set benchmarks for student achievement. The Left never wants to judged on the results, only their intentions. And teachers have griped about NCLB since its inception.
Can you say "throw the teachers union a bone"?

It seem to me giving states the right to decide what is best for their states' education systems is a good thing. Doing some fact checking, according to Reuters News:
Obama grants 10 states leeway on U.S. education law President Barack Obama said on Thursday he was granting 10 U.S. states exemptions from parts of the "No Child Left Behind" education law, a move that could prove popular in an election year with parents and teachers who have criticized the law.
"After waiting far too long for Congress to reform No Child Left Behind, my administration is giving states the opportunity to set higher, more honest standards in exchange for more flexibility," Obama said in a statement.
"Today, we're giving 10 states the green light to continue making reforms that are best for them," said Obama, who is scheduled to speak in more detail about the education law waivers at a White House event at 1:55 p.m. EST (1855 GMT).
The education law, a signature initiative passed under President George W. Bush, was aimed at holding public schools accountable for improving student performance. But it has been heavily criticized by many parents, teachers and state government officials.
The states to be granted waivers are Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oklahoma, and Tennessee.
The administration is also pledging to work closely with New Mexico, another state that has made a formal request for a waiver. Continued at link.

"No Child Left Behind" was a bad law, both parents and teachers objected to it because it utterly ruled out the individual needs of the children. Schools are not factories and educated people are not manufactured goods.

Thanks for the Research dove. I just heard the headline on the radio from the kitchen to here. The details just yet again point up that Obama apparently thinks he's a King. "Waiting too long for congress to reform".... what if the congress (we the people) had no desire to reform it? Of course I know the reality, that 20 or 30% of the people (some lib democrats) didn't like the act and they have a sympathetic President. It will be so nice when Obama is replaced with a President of ALL the people.

If the Obamaslurrers read past the propaganda, they'd realize that no one was happy with the NCLB mandates for endless testing, that the program made no leeway for immigrant children, that the program penalized schools who dealt with poorer&immigrant children. Further, it penalized teachers who worked in these less affluent schools. NCLB was an attempt to re-segregate education by closing schools which were integrated.

Of course congress has no desire to reform it. They've said themselves that their single most vital policy objective is to make Barak Obama a one-term president.
Notice however that Obama's reform consists of granting waivers to let states experiment with different models. The right feel states rights are vital, until they are expanded by a president they don't like.

The schools on the reservation in my county were penalized heavily and one even shut down! These are native Americans not immigrants. The biggest problem is not that these kids could not learn or were even performing under standard. The problem was the parents did not participate in the form of making sure their kids were in school on the days of the testing. I knew the principal, the gym teacher and the math teacher at that school. They did not care for the program. The math teacher was Math teacher of the year for the state. The other teachers and administrators from the other schools that were not predominately Ute really disliked the program as well. I see that Utah is not one of the ten.

"No Child Left Behind" was a well-intended DISASTER that SHOULD be "left behind" in Favor of REAL Reforms ...

That's true. The policies were circumvented anyway as well. Closing the DOE would be a good first step. And letting states completely handle things would be a start.

All the teachers I've talked to hate NCLB. It's basically assembly-line education intended to turn out robots who can't think for themselves. Trash it, I say. I'd rather listen to teachers than arrogant ideologues.
