For the last two days I have been a juror in a criminal case . Our system of justice still works. The defendant was judged by twelve citizens from his area of residence and where the incident occurred. He was presumed innocent, he had an attorney, and he did not have to testify against himself. I was reminded of the value of being an American .
And he was found not guilty and walked out a free man.

Just an FYI, America did not invent trial by jury.
The English did. In 1215, althought it was also used by the Greeks and the Romans too.

“Feminism has fought no wars. It has killed no opponents. It has set up no concentration camps, starved no enemies, practiced no cruelties. Its battles have been for education, for the vote, for better working conditions…for safety on the streets…for child care, for social welfare…for rape crisis centers, women’s refuges, reforms in the law.
If someone says, “Oh, I’m not a feminist,” I ask, “Why, what’s your problem?”

"Wesley told the early Methodists to gain all they could and save all they could so that they could give all they could. It means that I consider my money to belong to God and I see myself as one of the hungry people who needs to get fed with God’s money. If I really have put all my trust in Jesus Christ as savior and Lord, then nothing I have is really my own anymore."

According to "just war" standards of Christian theology, if Saddam Hussein killed 30,000 Iraqis, and the Iraq War killed 120,00, how was the War "just"?
You miss the whole point----at what frgn expense to him! ???
I mean actual...like tens of thousands of dollars. I mean abstract--embarrassment, humility for no reason, family abandonment---complete, total, never to be repaired, as now that they left him, presuming him guilty, then he is alienated, forever.
We have a system...not the best system. Hey! let's socialize the legal system! then you will see any hope of getting at "truth". watch Murder of Crows...it is revealing.
You know who prisoners are in the county jails? a bunch of people rounded up for silliness, for the most part, vendettas by other family members or neighbors who are playing "jailo", paying off speeding tickets because they are too poor to come up with the fine.
I know one lady whos kids were pepper-sprayed by a nervous mail lady who voluntarily came into her yard and got upset because a tiny dog barked! Pepper-sprayed small children! and the Mom was arrested for threatening to punch her one if she didn't get the hell off her property! I think Mom should have called CPS and now should sue the US postal system, if such is possible, but NO! she has to defend herself in court.
Another went to a public restroom after a couple of beers while accompanying her spouse on a trucking job, was perfectly quiet and pleasant but was arrested as a prostitute, and when that didn't work, on a PI!
Randy Travis was arrested for sitting in his own truck with an open bottle after the super-bowl. He wasn't driving...truck not moving! ok...he could have theoretically called someone to pick him up! PI~!!!! what the hell is that?
The people in prison are more decent, humanitarian, friendlier, and less prejudiced that those outside...at least the county jail folk. I have some experience as a prison physician, but I can't stand the NAZI wardens! i personally got one fired---had been there 23 yr til she messed with me...at a large Texas facility.

Again trial by jury and America and not at all correlated. In fact there are pretty significant problems with the jury system in America. It is quite biased against the poor and against minorities.

Yes, in some ways, but in other ways, no---KWinters...in other ways, naive people with some money, enough to rob blind legally, but not enough to cause trouble through their govt representatives are fleeces very handily for little or even nothing...being at the wrong place at the wrong time, or simply by chance. Our local police are the fishermen for the legal system----lawyers who over-charge, and they ALL DO! and all those employees! big buildings, etc.
Nah---there is a very healthy legal and prison industry going on---one which doesn't really give back to the citizens, sycophants sucking it dry as best it is able to.
So be glad were such and important player in the system, fod! for "the Man"...rah rah rah...

Oh, I don't have blind faith: I see tonnes of injustices. As to the Roman system you mentioned, there are some precedents in Roman jurisprudence, but damnatum ad leones isn't the same as sentencing in this system. As to Athens, the Pynx was where mass democracy and trials occurred and obloi dropped into pots determined guilt or innocence. -- Still, after the assault on civil liberties during the Bush/God years, and continued policies during the Obama years, the wheels do turn.
