This suggestive/evocative Phrase has long been one of the Ways I have made a Point about Religious Faith (in "God"), i.e., that The Way TRULY to Understand something is to engage it PERSONALLY (rather than stand-off dis-passionately "Objectively" and just THINKING about it ...) ...
One could study and think deeply about The Tree, Theobroma cacao, whose Seeds produce Chocolate, and about Theobromine (one of the Mind-influencing Substances that occurs in Chocolate), and about the healthy Anti-Oxidants in Chocolate -- especially in Dark Chocolate, and about how "Cocoa Butter" is used in certain popular Skin Lotions, and about the Economy of Chocolate in Africa and Latin America, etc., etc. ...
But The ONLY way finally to UNDERSTAND "Chocolate" is to TASTE It ... The most important Knowledge about ANYTHING derives directly from "Experience" ...
THAT has been the Point of my long-standing Affirmation, "Taste 'The Chocolate'" ...

All of which assumes that there's really a god with which to engage.

Chocolate is real.
Exactly. And you don't have to taste it to figure that out.

The Point is, again, that there is NO Substitute for "Experience," which is the Basis of the BEST "Kind" of Knowledge ...

One of my former Congregants took a Vacation Trip to see The Grand Canyon of Arizona and returned Home frankly entirely UN-impressed ... "It's just a Big Hole in The Ground ... " Anais Ninn observed, "We don't see Things the Way THEY are; we see Things the Way WE are ... " So, yes ... What we Experience re: "God," Life, The Universe and Everything indeed profoundly reveals "Reality" not ONLY "out there" but ALSO even more profoundly so, IN our own Hearts and Minds ...

Most Atheists I know have engaged religious faith quite personally as a member of one until they made the mistake of actually reading the Bible and trying to reason about and understand the God they are conditioned to believe. As has been noted frequently here "Reason is the greatest enemy that faith has" and "Reason is the Devil’s greatest whore; by nature and manner of being she is a noxious whore; she is a prostitute, the Devil’s appointed whore; whore eaten by scab and leprosy who ought to be trodden under foot and destroyed," to quote a famous reformer of the dysfunctional Catholic Church. He wasn't quite ready to give up religious faith.
The other way atheists have experienced religious faith has been by trying to prevent an unwanted faith imposed on them in public schools and public buildings. I find that religious faith tastes and smells less like chocolate than another dark brown substance.

Indeed, SOME People make the Fundamental ERROR of taking their OWN Personal Experiences as Normative ...

Every Person ultimately must indeed take PERSONAL Responsibility for the Nature and Content of her/his own Ideas, Beliefs, Impressions, Values ... (I DON'T think I'm anywhere near ALONE in embracing "Empiricism," however ... But I do take also my OWN Responsibility for MY Embrace of Knowledge-by-Experience ...)

Indeed. See the OP.
