Sounds like he's railing against hypocrisy in the church. It's not like it isn't true.

I've had several friends express enthusiasm for this video. I think the video makes some good points, but also has some flaws. Here is one response: www.patrolmag.com/2012/01/12/jonathan-d-...

Jesus and religion usually go hand-in-hand --- like Abbot and Costello, ham-and-Swiss, and gout-and-inflammation. Without a religious framework to maintain the insights and teachings of the spiritual prophet, the message will fade in a couple of generations. The article is shallow. Even the most beautiful garden is nutrified with manure. That's life.

Religion without relationship(s) is like Chinese water torture or a clanging symbol. And Communion is impossible without relationship. "Behaving" isn't near as important as "being". When we come together it isn't for the rules; it's for the readings, the prayers, the praise, worship, study, and sharing of grace. These make a refuge and offer strength to feed on.

I agree with Dutch's definition of religion and his assessment of its role in our spiritual journey. I do not believe this young man is referring to religion as we use it (spiritual discipline). I am sure he prays, reads his Bible, worships, etc. I think he is criticizing the view of external piety (as Jesus did in the Gospels and Paul did - especially in Galatians) as opposed to a transformed heart (Wesley's religion of the heart). I am happy to see a young person so committed to Christ and not to the label of being Christian. He seems like a nice kid!

Your analysis might give the video too much credit, but nicely said. One more response to the video: www.patheos.com/blogs/nadiabolzweber/201...

Can someone please answer this question for me. A couple of years ago I read a statement from a noted theologian to the effect: the final obstacle to one's immediate apprehension of the Divine is religion itself. For the life of me, I cannot remember who that theologian is. Can someone tell me who it is? Thank you.
