Southern Baptist consider a name change to stem their membership decline:

New Story Here

Your thoughts and recommendations for a new name (be nice!) would be appreciated.

I don't know, Nino --- you can call a burger-'n-Budweiser a fillet mignon avec moet '29 --- but no-one's going to be bamboozled by that.   Still, if those shock-troops for biblical literalism are hell-bent-on-leather about changing their name, I'd suggest:

Is it just me - that this seems like an inherently deceptive tactic? It sounds like an effort to keep their  real identity secret and hidden until they can "hook 'em".

The name Southern Baptist communicates their regional history; especially their racist history. I can see why they would want to change their name.

The term "Baptist" does not communicate a theology, eccesiology nor a soeteriology.  SBC is known for their socially conservative positions.  Therefore I believe "conservative" would be a good adjective for them.

They could re-image themselves as "The Christian Divemasters" and even issue their own merit badge.

I agree with the previous poster --- this is a bit of subtrafuge.  After all, what images does the term "Southern Baptist" bring to mind?  Anti-Modern, anti-science, -anti-evolution, book-burning, progressive thought suppressing, prohibitionist (but is a sneeky-pete drinker in private),  tobacco-chewing, gun-totting, rube who sleeps with his sister and marries his first cousin.  They want prayer in the schoools, the 10 Commandments on the wall, creationism in the science class, women in the kitchen and bedroom,  and Blacks and other Minorities in their place.   LGBT people must be given "repairative therapy" to "cure" their sin of Gayness --- although burning at the stake would be quicker and more efficient.

Did I leave anything out of the conceptual image?

Fess-up, --- isn't that what the term SBA conjures-up in the minds of many people?  It sure-as-hell-does here in the NorthEast.

It does here in Kansas, too. Unfortunately, not everyone here thinks that's a bad thing.

Why bother putting cologne on the boar (the masculine of lipstick on the pig)?  As the saying goes, "An ape's an ape, a varlet's a varlet, 'Though they be dressed in silk or scarlet."

The Sothern Baptist Convention is facing the same kind of modernization process today that mainline churches began facing a generation or two ago.  Good luck to them--they're going to need it.
