What are the differences in the various branches of Methodism? I mean, why do we have the United Methodist Church being mostly white and the AME and AME Zion churches mostly black? Beyond their racial differences of the nineteenth century, what is the differences now?

You can check out the websights of the African Methodist Churches and read about their history: www.amechurch.com/aboutus/history.php www.amez.org/news/amezion/aboutourchurch.html They "came out of" the Methodist Church due to racism. The UMC and these separate Methodist denominations work very closly with each other in ministry. Discussion to unite had been very active at one time, but the African denominations believed that their cultural distinctions (style of worship) aid their ministry. The denominations are very similar in theological outlook. There is no exclusion to membership in any of the denominations based on race. |
