Luther WAS a fanatic and how anyone could follow him, or be a member of his brand of religion is beyond me.

I quote Luther:Moreover, they [The Jews]  are nothing but thieves and robbers who daily eat no morsel and wear no thread of clothing which they have not stolen and pilfered from us by means of their accursed usury. Thus they live from day to day, together with wife and child, by theft and robbery, as archthieves and robbers, in the most impenitent security.

That is  one of his nicer quotes.

I am a Humanist. I believe in a rational philosophy of life, informed by science, inspired by art, and motivated by a desire to do good for its own sake and not by an expectation of a reward or fear of punishment in an afterlife.

In his later Years, Luther indeed WAS an Embarrassment and was such in Fact also even in his MIDDLE Years ...

My own Preference among The Wittenberg Reformers was Phillip Melanchthon, who was a much more measured and conciliatory Scholar ...

OTOH, Andreas Carlstadt was even far more inflammatory than Luther ...

So what, Bach was probably an atheist.

Read his letters.

One thing was on his mind as he composed his music, that's for sure.

Or listen to his music with satire in mind.  Most of it is downright hilarious in his send up of the theology.  While it is true that a believer won't notice, he was paid to make believers believe, and was after all a genius, the over the top settings of the text is delightful.
