Congratulations to New York for passing a historic civil rights law, "The Marriage Equality Act"!

Oh, great!!! Now GLBTs won't have to attend inferior schools, use separate facilities, and can vote!!! Ooops, no, wait. I confused this with real, "historic civil rights." Wait until the GLBTs realize that now if they split up, they can lose their homes, half of their assets and a pot load of money! LOL, the smart folks already realize that and won't be availing themselves of this, I expect. I'm an equal opportunity cynic about marriage. :)

I wonder if it will turn into another Prop 8 drama like here in CA.

When one person's civil rights can be denied then none of our rights are safe. NY State strengthen all of our rights with the passage of this legislation. "But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!" Amos 5:24

Excellent news !!! Now NJ across the Hudson will have to take up the issue seriously. I've already contacted my state reps some time ago to support a true marriage equality law when it is taken up --- which should be soon. Sadly, our beefy govr. has already stated that he wouldn't sign such a law --- RC, of course. The NY vote should move some of NJ's fence-sitters into the equality camp. I'll bet the NY Archbishop (and Cardinal-to-be) Timothy Dolan is weeping and wailing into his mitre. C'mon bish, suck it up; write it off as the price of not living in medieval Ireland. Comfort yourself with a belt of Jamison's Reserve and move on. The Red Hat awaits you.

It is a happy day for civil rights, however slowly ME is being adopted here in the U.S. Some may take advantage of being able to be legally married; for example, the NY couple I read about in the NYT. They met in their college days and now have been together for over 50 years. I guess no chance of them getting a divorce at this point. I think I will be content, though, with domestic partnership status that we have here in Washington State, even though D and I have taken care of most legal issues with wills. I still am amused and annoyed at the pitiful ones who always bleat out the sad old tune that SSM will destroy traditional marriage. I think they are doing a remarkably fine job of that all by themselves, with about 50% of their marriages ending up in divorce court. Jim

How, exactly? I'm not being snarky. If anything, I'd expect it to cost the city and businesses MORE because now they'll have to help pay for more spousal benefits.

NY has no residency requirements. The City and Niagara Falls will be even bigger destinations for people wanting to marry. And just think of all the residual benefits from weddings from photographers to caterers to stores with gift lists, etc. The wedding industry is BIG business. And all those businesses pay taxes mostly because they are small and don't have the advantages international companies have to avoid them.

There seems to be a lot of joy regarding this action. It makes Pastor G and me sad because no one has asked what God thinks about this. His word clearly defines marriage as between a man and a woman. God Himself gave Eve to Adam.
