Im in love with my church because the fact is that we accept everyone no matter what.However Im thinking right now about adding some Zen sittings into my time structure along with church.

I love my church but tehre is one problem. I do miss the structure, discipline and direction of the Christian church. Its like not long ago in church we started singing out of a hymnal a song and this guy started a s a joke singing over everyone going LALALALALA instead of the worda and laughign and we have stuff like that go on all the time not everyones doign teh same thing some partake in the rituals some not, we all do our own thing and its awesome, in one way wqe need our UU because its the one place where everyone is like tottally accepted! I need a church where someone like taht guy can go in and be tottalloy irreverant towards religiona nd still be accepted. I do ahve to say though, that I miss being guided and directed by a  chruch where everyone is on the same note were all doing the same thing together and being a family.

Howcver, Im not willing to leave UU for that I love my church too much! I love watching starngers just walk in off the street and know they will be accepted its awesome!

So Im thinking right now about going back to Zen instead and adding ti to my UU church. Zen is cool because theyre accepting of everyone, all religions are accepted, but at the same time tehres structure to the sitting. When you walk you pretty much have to go by theyrer rituals everyone takes theyre shoes off we have to be quite we have to bow when we walk in and go by the timeline the bells that go off tell us when to sit and then we sit and stay stilla nd eprfectly quite for 30 minutes at a time. At the end of some services we have chanting and tea rituals its ahave to not optional you go by thei rituals when you go in. So there is structure there, so Im thinking Im ay start going back to that twice a month along with my UU church.

Its a cool way of being tolerant open and accepting of all religions and being able to be directed and get structure at the same time.

We touch the lives of people we do not know. They may read our words or meet us on the street. Their perception of us may change the way they feel or think. Let us set a good example with our words and actions.

Zen sounds like a great way to put more structure into your life, Rider.

Does your UU church let such groups do their thing in the church building of an evening or weekend? Each UU church I was a member of had a Zen group that did sits regularly at our church even though only a very few people in the group also were members of or went to our church. People might come to watch at certain times. Then, one church had someone from the Zen group demonstrate how to do simple Zen meditations after a service every so often for those who were interested.

If your church doesn't do anything like that, maybe after you get into the Zen group you could see about bringing the group into your church. That could be really great for other people and you, too.

Thankyou Rev Dorris for your beautiful post. Your words are truthful and have given me much food for thought about the effect we can have on people's lives without realising it.

We can sit back and see what happens or we can take action then see the results.  Some might say nothing will happen unless we take the first step..  Sit or act -- the choice is yours.

I think this poem by Edgar Lee Masters from his Spoon River Anthology has meaning here,

George Gray

I have studied many times
The marble which was chiseled for me --
A boat with a furled sail at rest in a harbor.
In truth it pictures not my destination
But my life.
For love was offered me and I shrank from its disillusionment;
Sorrow knocked at my door, but I was afraid;
Ambition called to me, but I dreaded the chances.
Yet all the while I hungered for meaning in my life.
And now I know that we must lift the sail
And catch the winds of destiny
Wherever they drive the boat.
To put meaning in one's life may end in madness,
But life without meaning is the torture
Of restlessness and vague desire --
It is a boat longing for the sea and yet afraid.

(Each short poem in the collection is a meditation about the life of a person buried in a smalltown cemetery and based upon images and epitaphs chiseled on the tombstone. A wonderful collection offering much food for thought.)

I like the Poem.

The question

Where will the Winds of Destiny take us?
