Hi Friends,

Sri Ramana Maharshi's Upadesha Saram is a very simple teaching of Sri Ramana. As the name suggests, its upadesha saram , the essence of the Teachings. This mail thread hopes to introduce the Beeliefnet community to this wonderful teaching.

Verse1: As per the Lord's laws Results of action are obtained. Action is not Supreme, it is lifeless entity.

Karma means an action that is done. "As i sow, so do i reap" , people often say. This is what? A law of nature? That such a law should always hold true, This is then taken care by the God. Karma is only a dead entity. it is jada padartha... lifeless entity. therefore it cannot be self effluent and self revealing. it cannot be self actuating.

Karma theory is misunderstood by many people. There are statements like Everything is destiny and these are wrong. Most people who blame it on "Destiny" have to understand that Hindu scriptures speak of not just "Prarabdha Karma" but also of "Purushartha". Purushartha means human effort. Karma is considered to be of three types: Sachita, agami and prarabdha. Prarabdha means, prak-arabdha... that is, that which has already began to bear fruits. I do something, the result may not come immediately. like writing an exam. the result comes later. When it begins to bear fruits, then its prarabdha karma. Sanchita karma, is all past action and Agami things that will be done in future.

So that a karma should bear a certain fruit is as per the law of the Lord; God. Its in our hands to perform actions. The results are never in our hands.

We will have to spend some time to understand God in order to get this clearly. I shall postpone this discussion to the next post, in order to allow people to understand this much.

Verse 2: One who hankers after the results of his actions gets lost in the "ocean of actions", the results are transiet and its a never ending loop.

Firstly, Actions give temporary results. All actions. this is a simple law. What ever be the action, be it meditation, prayer or a materialistic pursuit ... the result is a transient and limited entity - Space wise and time wise limited.

so naturally when someone is looking for Liberation which is unlimitedness or Purnatva [meaning, Total or Completeness of ones own being], actions are misleading. A person seeking completeness through the objects of the world will keep on "trying" various actions. This is something we all do. we seek completeness through money. We think "if only we have lot of money we can be happy", but then, there is already someone who has this dream fulfilled. There is already someone who has lots of money and yet he is incomplete. Please see this friends. We may dream of various objects of the world and what ever we dream of, there is already someone who has it! Why do we seek these objects? To Fill the sense of incompleteness which is lurking within. But these objects cannot fill the sense of incompleteness ... as it is the property of mind to keep wanting.

Thus a person is actually seeking in the wrong place. Money did not make me complete, so now i seek name and fame and so on... This way people keep seeking ... and all objects being transiet and limited ... none of them can destroy the sense of incompleteness that is lurking within.

So a person who runs after actions and the results of actions in the hope that a particular object, if obtained, is going to make him or her complete is grossly mistaken.

Before i move to the next topic ... a point to be noted here. For me to be happy, none of my desires need to be fulfilled! This is to be noted. Suppose i make a list of all desires which when fulfilled, i feel i can be happy. and then just before i chart out an action plan someone cracks a joke and if it were a really nice joke ... i would forget all the desires for a few moments and enjoy the joke. The joke did not fulfill any of my desires! Please see. The joke did not fulfill any desires. on the contrary it just make my notions about myself dissolve for a few moments ... and thus the Joy. One who runs after desire fulfillment to gain happiness is grossly mistaken.
