Hi everyone!

I live at home with my parents even though I'm hitting 30, mainly due to lack of money and the cost of living.

They are finally wanting to redecorate my room.

The problem is, It hasn't been done for nearly 20 yrs, during which time I've moved out twice and had to move back home, this means I have TONS of stuff I need to clear out.

I find it really hard to cut off emotional ties with things I own, I know theres the 6 month rule? (havent worn/used it in 6 months then throw out) but i find it really hard to do.

Has anyone any helpful advice on how I can find this process easier?

I'm seeing the end result in my head which spurs me on, but I'm finding the decision making part really hard.

Thanks everyone :)

I read in a book that you should take pictures of most of the stuff you treasure, then get rid of them! It's only the memories you cherish, not the thing itself.

What did people do a hundred years ago with things they wanted to keep but they didn't use?  They put them in trunks & put them in the attic.  I have a boat load of things from high school that I'll never use again but I don't want to get rid of it.  I have placed them in large plastic bags (you can get very large ziplock bags at the store) & placed them in plastic storage bins.  Right now they are in a closet I never use, but eventually I will be placing them into the attic.

As far as the other stuff you're never going to wear or use, give it away to an organization or something... or even have a garage sale.  It's better for it to be used & it will give you extra space (to get more stuff )  :)

I'm a clutter bug so I need all the help I can get.  I have lots of shelves & I use photo boxes or shoe boxes covered with contact paper to hide my clutter.  What's inside the boxes is not organized but you'd never know it.  It just looks like a few pretty boxes on a shelf.

Hope this helps.

That's a nice post and thank you for sharing.Clear all of the clutter from the tops of the dressers, closets, and any waste on the floor.  Clutter is destructive to the positive Feng Shui energies.Your energy gets unhealthy by clutter, badly arranged furniture or rooms, harmful energy from outside, wrong colors, badly placed objects, a negative attitude. Feng Shui shows you how to manipulate subtle energy to make it work for you. With Feng Shui there will be improvement in health, well-being, motivation, self-esteem, self-confidence and good things can begin to happen in our life - better relationships, career, prosperity, luck, direction.

Suggest that with things you don’t use, but are still in good condition, you consider giving them to someone who could put them to good use.  Wouldn’t you want someone to get some use/enjoyment out of things you are merely keeping- and not using? It makes me feel good knowing that things I no longer use are being enjoyed by others. Yes, this includes donating to Goodwill or to whoever can put the items to good use.

I like the photo idea too!

Irene.

I agree that for things you're emotionally tied to, it might make you feel better to think of someone else having them rather than throwing them out (and also if you hate throwing away perfectly good stuff like I do).  My only problem when I do that is that I worry that the new owner(s) might not take good care of it!  :)
