Hope that works out for you, New Earth.

I went to a service at a Religious Science church some years ago and recall that the people in that church seemed very welcoming and sincere. The overall beliefs didn't suit me especially well, but people seemed enthusiastic and involved and not just sitting like sponges as I've seen in some UU churches.

Sure wish I lived in New England. I think a classic Unitarian church would suit me. Only problem is that I'd never survive the winters up there. As the old Yankee joke goes, they have ten months of winter and two of darn poor sledding.

I wonder, really, how widespread these phenomena are?  Is it truly such an expansive problem, or are most UUs satisfied with their religious homes and find no need to participate in an online community such as this (and therefore underrepresenting ourselves)?

I haven't the slightest clue.  Obviously, I'm leaning heavily on the probability of the latter, mainly because I just don't experience any of this outside of hearing about it online.  I have, however, been known to call myself "naively optimistic".  Am I wearing blinders?

In hope,
EPU[/QUOTE]

I can't speak for anyone else here, but I couldn't be happier with my church.  Our minister challenges us spiritually and morally in ways I never experienced in twenty years as a Roman Catholic.  And the community, while there's argument, it's just the normal bickering in a loving family.  I'm home and happy to be here.

As for why I'm on B-net, I...just like arguing about religion.

Hi New Earth - glad you came back to your own thread ;-)

I think that many UUs, especially the younger UUs, have perspectives that are very close to the New Thought churches.

The difference of course being that among UUs this is one of many diverse perspectives. I hope that attending both works out for you. Are there other members of your UU who are  interested in New Thought ?  Perhaps you could start a study group? Something more specifically New Thought than the Sanctuary group you mentioned?

Jamlawkin,

BTW you did not have to say you were sorry. That's just a button of mine that I feel strongly about. I do get your point that sometimes we need leadership. I believe in the higher self within us. I believe that when we are listening to the voice within, we are more likely to work for the greater good of the community.

BTW - I am feeling better today - Can you tell? {grin}

(hope I didn't offend anyone)

Rats! No, thanks. Hot and humid ain't the kind of weather I like at all. Give me nice dry desert heat any old time. Gotta win the lottery so we can move to Phoenix. :D

Say, what's with these "crazy Rasberry ants" [No, I didn't misspell that. Named for the exterminator who first tried dealing with them] a friend of mine emailed me about that y'all have down there? That like to invade and ruin electronic gear, esp. computers?

I've heard of 'em, but all I've got in my yard are your run-of-the-mill swarm-up-your-leg-and-cover-you-in-pus-filled-welts fire ants.  And africanized bees.  We've got them, too.  And did I mention the giant cockroaches?  Pretty much, if it's small, squishy, and unpleasant, you'll find it in Houston.

Ewwwww...don't remind me of the giant roaches.

Grad school friend of mine moved to Houston after we got out of school. Told me she woke up one morning seeing this vague black blotch on her ceiling (contact lenses not in yet.) She found her glasses, put them on and screamed. The "blotch" was a fat roach about 3" long, she said. She resolved that moment to move very much further west and did not long afterward.

Roaches the length of my fingers are NOT my idea of critters I want to share my living space with, so no thanks, y'all can keep Houston for yourselves.

I went to the Religious Science service today. I loved it! I could not believe the things they are teaching the kids in the sunday school classes. wow. At the end of the service, they have the kids come up and show what they learned in their class that day - today they learned about the 7 chakras, being the layers that God made to protect our physical bodies...and learned that the physical body is surrounded by the spiritual body.

The service itself was great too, SO much better than the UU service. SO much more emotional, spiritual, uplifting. My eyes were streaming with tears. It was nice to finally hear the word GOD and to hear it being used without a specific gender, just the 'source' of existence. The music was great too! It is much more contemporary than UU hymns. The music was more modern and the lyrics are very deep and metaphysical. On top of that, it has a kind of diversity that UU tries to acheive but for some reason does not often - the racial diversity. I loved that too. There were also a lot of people closer to my age, whereas the UU church is mostly people my parents and grandparents age - which is fine - but it is nice to be around people closer to my age and place in life. I am really just astounded right now...it truly was what I was expecting and hoping it to be. Now I just have to get my daughter to come one day - I know she would love the kids services there. I guess I will still try to attend both churches however I can work it out - I JUST got inolved at the UU church and would hate to leave so soon. I'll work it all out somehow. Right now I am just going to enjoy the fact that I finally went and that it was as great as I had hoped it would be :)

I thought when I found UU that it was the religion I thought I 'made up' in my head and didn't know it existed, but now Religious Science is even more so - straight down to my specific spiritual beliefs on God, life, afterlife, spirituality, spiritual evolution, etc. I am quite happy today :)

Congratulations!  I'm glad it fit you so well.  Sounds like a community I might also feel comfortable visiting.

How does this affect your affiliation with Unitarian Universalism, if at all?
