Alyosha, I feel and think the Tao Teh Ching contains timeless concepts (in the human experience, that is). The Mitchell translation is actually rather modern in that it refers to things which likely did not exist in China when Lao Tzu wrote it. I think it does help convey the spirit, if not the letter, of the Original.

Anyway, my point is, I don't think you need historical perspective on the Tao Teh Ching. Now, for Dostoyevsky's Devils, that is quite helpful...
