A dream can mean many things which is what the life of symbols is all about. Coming to a dream with pre-suppositions that is will mean a certain thing does not help the dreamwork.

And, of course, different meanings for each individual. Even dream symbol books acknowledge the individuality of the symbol to the dreamer.

I have never seen much acknowlegement of individual symbols in dream symbol dictionaries. Those books exist because the authors think that they have the meaning of the symbols, which everyone can buy and use. It's always good when someone posts on here and says the dream dictionary didn't help. The books may pay lip service to individuality, but if the authors believed it they wouldn't create the books. In my original post on this thread, I was referring to a certain dream symbol having more than one meaning to the dreamer.

There are many things in esoteric work that do not work as a 'one size fits all'. Color comes to mind, symbols is another. Dreams are symbols to be interpreted. Each symbol can have a different meaning, person to person. Dream books, thereby, become generalities.

There is no one size that fits all as Spiritalk mentioned but people living in a close society or sharing the same culture tend to have at least some symbols in common. Dream interpretation books generally don't work across cultures but sometimes do work within the culture they are written for...
That's why the dream has to be taken in the context of the dreamer and that context is often reflected in the dreamers own language... That is what enables interpretation on boards such as this when dealing with people across cultures and varying symbol meanings... Blessings and Much Love All... |
