Does anyone know if there's a specific custom to refrain from having sex after a family member has died, or if it's common practice during the mourning period?

In terms of religious rules, first 10-12 days is said to be impure for any religious and family activities. For the family where death has occured, it is best to consult some priest regarding rules or read dharma shastras.

saatra.ng,
in dharma sastras I have I couldn't find this specific rule. But since all mourning rules in general represent a renounced behavior, this seems implied. For more see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mourning Hope this helps. Hare Krishna "This Krishna Consciousness is a science to understand what is the difference between a dead body and a living body".
