About Me
I am a practicing Hindu. My ishtadev is Ganesh. I live in Enid, Oklahoma. I used to attend a Unitarian Universalist fellowship when I lived in Norman, Oklahoma. I and some others here in Enid are looking into starting one here in Enid. I organize two satsangs, one here in Enid...which very rarely meets due to conflicts with everyone's schedules....and one in Norman that still meets at the UU fellowship..that satsang meets monthly (except when either the building is rented out for special events or the building is being used by another group that meets there for something special or whenever members of that satsang have other events and they won't be able to make it). I am gay and am working on starting a PFLAG chapter here in Enid as well. I used to go to the one in Norman from time to time and I think something like that here in Enid would be perfect.
I am fascinated by all religions and enjoy learning more about them, studying them, reading sacred texts, and discussing religious topics with others. Many times I gain new insights into spiritual questions or thoughts or find a new way of looking or approaching something I hadn't considered. I have many friends of differing religions: Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, Atheist, Pagan, Hindu, etc. Not only are my friends differ in religions, but often also in other aspects such as sexual orientations, political views, etc. Thus my friends are very diverse and each of them offers a unique perspective on the world. What we share in common is our love for learning new things from others and sharing with others as well.
I founded an organization that most members just refer to as the Commonwealth or Commonwealth Society. On chapter resources we're using United Commonwealth Communion (though the abbreviations obviously causes conflict and so that is not the official name). The official name of the organization is long: Commonwealth Society of the United Federation of Democratic People. The idea being that we are an organization (society) founded for the common well-being of the members of that organization, that with other chapters (we have 3) are united together in a federation style governing system for the organization that the people (members) all agree to use a democratic system and believe that democracy is the fair and best way to govern the organization. The idea for the organization came to me while my mom was going through chemotherapy and radiation treatments for breast cancer. It occured to me that most of the help my mom was receiving was from family, her friends, and my friends. She did receive a little help from the government....DHS gave her $10 a month in food stamps. Other than that they wouldn't help in any other ways despite having to limit the number of hours she worked to 20 a week by her doctor. She tried Social Security (as advised by her oncologist), but they told her the only way they'd give her benefits was if she quit work...but that it'd take 3 months after that before she'd get any assistance. And as for the American Cancer Society....all they did was send my mom catalogues to buy wigs and hats. I had read online about organizations that once existed in massive numbers in the US called benefit societies or mutual societies, many of these have gone away because of the profitization of insurance companies. There are some fraternal societies that still have such things. Well I liked the idea along with cooperatives and so along with learning the definition of the word commonwealth...I began to create the organization in 2006. Today we have 3 chapters, 13 members, and almost $300 raised...which we use for member assistance. We're looking into housing cooperative and workers' cooperatives, we're working on disaster relief plans as well. We encourage recycling through using any money raised from taking members' recyclables for the organization.
So this is just a little bit about me. Ever active and busy. :)
