    Welcome, spring!

    Monday, April 14, 2008, 2:15 PM [General]

For my profile picture this season, I am not including myself, but a close-up of one of the zillions of lilacs that my husband and I enjoyed last year on my birthday.  We went to "Lilac Sunday" at a park in downtown Boston that is known for its rare and voluminous liliac showing each year.  It was absolutely a sun- and fragrance-drenched day, and I think happy thoughts whenever I see the pictures from it.  Hope it brings a little spring freshness into your life!

    On finishing things

    Thursday, February 28, 2008, 12:12 PM [General]

Last night, I finished a crafts project I'd been working on diligently for 3 months.  It's a baby blanket for some close friends who have just last week welcomed their beautiful baby girl to the world.  I am floating on air with joy at having finished this, one of the most complex crochet patterns I've ever attempted.  And it has me thinking about the spiritual side of crafting.  On this project alone, I struggled with doubt (will I finish? am I doing this right? is my arthritic thumb going to allow me to do this), focused and was mindful (must not lose count of what row I'm on; must follow the pattern), and now am celebrating both the satisfying feeling of doing something hand-made for a dear friend and the joyous reason for the craft, their sweet and lovely daughter.

Do you ever invest meaning into your hobbies like that? I'd love to hear stories! Meanwhile, here's a picture of the baby blanket I made.

    New Season, New Photo

    Monday, January 28, 2008, 1:25 PM [General]

I finally have the right photo to keep up my pledge to change my photo to reflect each new season.  I love this one because it will be a reminder to me that wintertime doesn't mean curling up with hot cocoa and hibernating by the fire (well, it means that too....).  Winter also offers us the chance to see the outdoors in a different way.  There's beauty in the sparseness of wintertime, the clean slate of snow, the feeling that great things lurk in the soil waiting to bloom come springtime.  Here are some of my favorite Health & Healing features for keeping healthy and happy through the winter months:

    Happy winter, everyone!

Join the Spiritual Walk Across America

    Wednesday, January 9, 2008, 10:59 AM [General]

You might have seen renowned fitness instructor Kathy Smith on Beliefnet a lot recently.  She gave us an interview on how fitness saved her life, and shared an audio meditation on how to make peace with your body.

Now, Kathy is launching a new project with us, a 10-month journey toward the Spiritual Walk Across America.  Each month, she'll announce a new theme for health, fitness, and spiritual reflection (and a fun contest to go with it).  The community of walkers will grow as the months go on, and we'll be sharing our progress, our struggles, and our insights.  Then, on October 4, 2008, we'll all head out for a 5-mile walk and (virtually) travel across America!

Click here to learn more about the walk, and click here to join Kathy's Spiritual Walking Group.

    The December Dilemma

    Monday, December 24, 2007, 11:08 AM [General]

Well, it's not really about health (unless you consider it to be about the crushing stress that can make us sick during the holidays), but I did want to post an entry about the December Dilemma Watch blog that I wrote this year.  The blog was ostensibly about the "Christmas wars" that have raged over the past few years--those debates over how much religious holidays can/should be celebrated in public places with displays, prayers, and other signs of the season.  But a funny thing happened on the way to war this year....nothing!  It was a rather quiet year, a rather different year, and my final post in the blog is my idea of why.

Restorative Yoga for Body & Mind

    Tuesday, December 4, 2007, 5:19 PM [General]

My yoga teacher, Liz Owen, is just the greatest.  Of course, everyone should feel that way about their teachers and guides, but one of the reasons I really do feel that way about Liz is that she's wonderfully articulate in presenting yoga practice as something restorative, healing, and gentle.  Every week, my class helps me reconnect my body and spirit.

She's created a gallery for Beliefnet, which you can see by clicking here, that includes 10 poses, plus insights on both how to do the pose, and what benefits the pose will bring to your body.  Happy stretching, everyone!

    RIP Noodle

    Tuesday, November 27, 2007, 10:36 AM [General]

Non-pet-people might not fully understand how painful it is when a pet dies, but those of you who are animal lovers definitely get it.  Pet losses have always hit hard in my family, but when Noodle the Poodle died in 2003 in the midst of a cyclone of other family problems, it was really painful.

I wrote an essay, which you can read here, about the insights I gained from going through that tough period.

First comes love, then comes marriage, then......sometimes there are struggles that couples didn't anticipate.  Enter the dizzying, exhausting process of coping with infertility.  Between all the doctors, specialists, invasive procedures, and decision-making processes, though, there can be tremendous spiritual longing.  Am I meant to have a child?  Why did God make my body this way?  How should I talk to God during this difficult time?

We just put up a beautiful gallery of healing prayers for those facing infertility.  Click here to view it, and may you find peace and wholeness in your life.

    Living with Back Pain Group

    Thursday, November 15, 2007, 10:46 AM [General]

Another health & healing group to think about is the Living with Chronic Back Pain group.  This is a place to get support from others who are suffering from - and learning to cope with - the constant ache/stab/hurt/twings/spasm of back pain.  Trade coping tips, prayers, support - it's a really caring group.
